Humane education

With your help, FAPS continues to grow into one of the “most progressive” shelters in the state of NC. Our focus includes a safe haven for animals and also the further education of our community to prevent unwanted pets, through an effective humane education program available to both adults and children.

We believe that a real, effective change begins with our children and that humane education is key, therefor, FAPS has made a commitment through the year 2010 to provide free humane education materials to 226 classrooms in Cumberland County and Ft. Bragg Schools, through (NAHEE), National Association for Humane and Environmental Education, the educational affiliate of The Humane Society of the United States. Their award winning humane education program, KIND NEWS, Kids In Natures Defense teaches pet responsibility and kindness to animals.

Kind News is a colorful classroom newspaper, tailored for children in grades K-6. It features puzzles, projects, stories, and celebrity interviews, which teach children the importance of treating people, animals, and the environment with kindness and respect. Its emphasis on humane values; such as fairness, compassion, and responsibility seek to encourage good character traits in children. It is published monthly and delivered to participating classrooms, accompanied with teacher handouts, posters, Kind Kid ID cards, and a host of other fun, educational, humane resources and worksheets.

How can I participate in the “Adopt A Classroom” program?

For a tax-deductible donation of $30.00 a business, civic group or individual can adopt a classroom for one year. A subscription to Kind News provides 9 monthly issues, September through May. Each issue comes with 32 full color newspapers and a teacher’s reference guide as well as a 53-page teachers resource book packed with reproducible worksheets that reinforce lessons on responsible pet care, wildlife, and environmental stewardship.
Donors may select a specific classroom, grade level, or school to receive these materials or FAPS can make the selection for you from our list of classrooms waiting to be adopted.

We need your help in educating future pet owners of our county. Consider adopting a classroom today! For more information on adopting a classroom or to schedule a FAPS classroom speaker

Fayetteville Animal Protection Society, Inc(FAPS). was the first animal shelter in our area to implement a successful humane education program of this kind, thanks to our first corporate sponsor Systel. In addition FAPS has sponsored spay/neuter billboards and frequently visits classrooms and gives presentations on kindness to animals. FAPS also distributes free educational literature at public venues to adults on general pet care, behavioral issues, pet overpopulation, and animal welfare topics.
